The work on these fabulous albeit temporary structures, begins in late December when sculptors and artists from all over the world descend upon the region. Using ice pickers, lasers, and chisels they begin by cutting through over 180,000 square meters (1.93 mm square feet) of ice from the nearby frozen Songhua river and hauling it over to the festival grounds. Then with the help of over 150,000 square meters (1.61 mm square feet) of snow, they begin crafting, sculpting and building, their masterpieces.
